Market information We are now entering a more stable time of the year, when the summer´s peaks flatten out, with life and business in the Algarve returning to a more sedate pace. Now is a good time to review the year to date, and try to predict what the last part of the year will bring.
Tourism figures, which are a key indicator, proved what was generally expected-whilst booking was left until later than we traditionally expect, the tourism industry exceeded many peoples expectations and is on course for a very good year (click http://www.the-news.net/cgi-bin/google.pl?id=1028-1 for the full story). It seems that tourists have aimed for safe, well known destinations such as the Algarve this year.
There is no doubt that the latter part of this year has been more positive than expected, but any recovery will be gradual and slow. Whilst all of the statistical indicators are not, as yet, available, the initial signs are showing that we have reached the bottom and are, in fact slowly on the up. The Algarve property market is still a buyers market, and, as ever, cash is king. The banks seem to be more flexible now, but are still fairly conservative with regards to their lending strategies.
The exchange rate (€ to £), has slightly weakened in the last month, but at the time of writing is on the increase again (source: www.xe.com).
